The Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, is always known as one of the saviors of the earth. The land of man-eaters eminently plays a role as the natural shield of humanity and life. Approximately 10,000 sq km of reserve forest is spread down the southeastern coastal part of West Bengal (India) and southwestern Bangladesh. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The feel of the forest is like a gagged suspense, it is relatively a quiet and soundless death battlefield of the silent killers and enriched with an amazing biodiversity. The ocean (Bay of Bengal), the devastating storms, the mangroves with the sculpture of sharp life roots standing above the illusion, fireworks of crab movement down the mud, the mighty rivers, the mysterious creeks, the wonderful cycle of low and high tide twice daily, deadly wild lives, the beautiful birds, colorful flora and fauna, the challenging village life of the islanders, everything creates an untold story of the wildest part of the beautiful rural Bengal. It is a unique blending of Beauty and the Beast. Here in the Sundarbans, the struggle for existence both for the predator and prey is completely severe. There is no margin of error.
The killers are the messengers of death and the locals don’t want to see them as they believe that it decreases the span of their life, while the visitors want to see them out of passion or fun, which stands as a real fallacy between myths and reality. Sometimes, married ladies break their bangles, which they use as their sign of marriage when their spouse goes to the jungle for crabbing. Where a mother holds tightly the hands of her child, crying for her deceased father, who has died due to a silent, brutal attack by a gigantic man eating a royal Bengal Tiger, or a giant saltwater estuarine crocodile, or a killer shark or a poisonous king cobra while collecting honey or fishing amidst the forest for the sake of his family, it appears tragic when again that mother compels and encourage her son to do the same as his deceased father because of livelihood.
There are some villages where you may find death stories in every alternative next door. The man-eaters here are feared, loved and worshiped and this is the true portrait and fantasy of unexplored Sundarbans.
